St. Augustine saw the pursuits of carnal man and elevated his writing to what a City of God with godly pursuits might be.  He started out in contention to God at a young age.  His mother was a devout Christian her entire life.  He was an academian who was sent off to secular schools in Carthage and other places. He was a talented rhetoric. He was wrapped up with lust and took on a woman who bore him a child. He was temporarily influenced by Manichaesm started by Mani, a charsimatic leader from Persia.  Eventually, he went to Rome and became a rhetoric and advocate for the gov't in Milan under Justina and her son.  He was influenced by Bishop Ambrose who was both an intellect and a Christian.  He could see that Ambrose possessed a special religious wisdom that fulfilled his lifelong quest for answers.  His mother joined him Milan and continued to lead him to Christian doctrine and salvation.  Eventually he moved out to the country and had a strong conversion when he read about the life of St. Anthony.   St. Anthony was a wealthy man who gave his life and possessions up for God.  A young child led him to the writings of St. Paul.  He had a trance like experience to pour out his soul fully to Yahweh and Jesus.
