Susan Wagner founded Equine Advocates in 1996. A horse lover from a very young age, Wagner became involved in the horse industry and began her career with horses by working with Thoroughbreds on the New York and Maryland racing circuits. Wagner spent years in the racing industry in different capacities from hands-on work with the horses themselves to public relations to hosting and producing radio and live in-house talk shows to free-lance writing.
Ms. Wagner has expanded Equine Advocates' programs to include humane equine education with the opening of the Education Center on the sanctuary grounds. On January 16, 2007, Wagner appeared on the award-winning Martha Stewart Show to talk about horse slaughter, equine rescue and the PMU industry. In 2009, she appeared on the local CBS affiliate in Albany, following an article in the New York Times about the seizure of emaciated Thoroughbreds from an abusive New York breeder. In 2010 Equine Advocates rescued Bobby II Freedom, a former New York City carriage horse who was on his way to slaughter. That rescue received lots of media attention. The great artist, Peter Max heard about Bobby's story and painted his portrait for charity. Ms. Wagner knows her main goal for Equine Advocates is to educate the public about responsible horse guardianship through education, outreach and hands-on experience. "This sanctuary is a haven for horses," she said recently. "Through example, education and rescue, we can make a huge difference in the protection of horses in this country and across North America."
