Like newly elected presidents give an inaugural address to lay out their priorities, vision, and the kind of administration they want to lead, the early chapters of each of the four Gospels in the New Testament give us public words from Jesus that lay out his vision and values. The thing is, Jesus' inaugural address reveals a "platform" that takes society's usual expectations and turns them upside-down. Jesus' message subverts the idea of kingdoms and empires, announces God's blessing on the marginalized, and speaks of God's reach to include those that Respectable Religious people had regarded as outcasts. In this week's episode, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve continue exploring how the season of Epiphany gives us chances to be re-introduced to Jesus all over again, and today they'll look at how we meet Jesus on his own terms by listening to his first public words in each Gospel.
