Something amazing happened on the day of Pentecost, mere weeks after Jesus' resurrection--a band of former fishermen and tax collectors started speaking about Jesus, and they could be heard and understood in languages they did not know, as the Holy Spirit gave them the ability. Since then, the community of Jesus' followers has experience the Spirit's presence in ways that have to do with language--often in powerful, astounding ways that make it clear that something unusual was happening. But what exactly is this gift known as "speaking in tongues"? Is it the ability to speak in known human langauges? Private prayer utterances? Public displays of ecstatic speech that require someone else to interpret or translate? All of the above? In today's "Crazy Faith Talk" conversation, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve take a look at this gift and the various understandings of what it means, as well as guardrails for how we think about it and avoid either belittling something that is valuable to others or abusing it as a way of puffing ourselves up.
