As we exited 2017 and entered 2018 many individuals are no longer amongst the living and have transitioned on. There are also individuals that have lost love ones and are often reminded of the memories that were once shared.

When one experience a loss of any kind how it is expressed is based on several different factors. Many were taught to believe that one is suppose to cry as a result of the loss of a love one. Crying is a natural response. However do you know the difference between grieving and mourning?

Grief is a natural response to a loss. It's the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. Many associate grieving with the death of a loved one which is often the cause of the most intense type of grief. However, any loss can cause grief including a divorce, or relationship breakup. What causes grief is not clear. What causes prolonged or complicated grief can also vary.

Mourning as oppose to grief refers to how someone may feel as it relates to the loss of a loveone. Mourning is the outward expression of the loss. Mourning usually involves culturally determined rituals that help the bereaved individual make sense of their loved one's life and give structure to what can feel like a very confusing time. Therefore while the internal pain of grief is a more universal phenomenon how people mourn also is influenced by the process as to how one grieve.
