Today the U.S. military, and more importantly the U.S. as a whole, faces as many or more significant challenges from hostile nations than ever in its history.

A powerful China is actively using economic strength to attempt domination of diplomatic, informational, military and economic power spheres in its region explicitly to override American interests. It is currently bullying neighbors such as the Philippines, overwhelming small nations with Mafia-like loans and payoffs to government officials, such as in the Solomon Islands, and in other  regions such as Africa and Central and South America.

Russia has of course aggressively and quite illegally attacked Ukraine and in the resulting conflict is responsible for the deaths of 100’s of thousands of deaths. His forces turned out to be not as good as advertised but all indications are that his forces have learned a great deal from this war --- and he has no compunction with sending men to their needless deaths for his own egotistical vision of a resurrected Soviet Union.

North Korea, a country that likely has some nuclear capability, continues testing its missile capability and is actively supporting Russia with weaponry.
