Don't take matters into your own hands.  Genesis 18:9:15

The first time God made Abram a promise of rewards when he was 75 years if age and said that He would make him a great nation. Then God gives Abram the promise of land for him and his seed. Abram knew he had no heirs and he chose his most faithful steward to give his inheritances to.  In those days a man inheritances if there were no sons, would not be given to his wife.  God then let that his chosen steward would not be his heir but one that comes from your own seed would be thy heir. And he said can you count the stars in the heavens or the sands of the sea, so shall thy seeds be.

Abram heard God promises but not yet fully understanding them.  God kept talking about thy seeds and even said, from thy bowels. So after waiting they believed God would and could make Abram a nation and give them all the land that stood in front of them. They just couldn’t comprehend when or how their seed could be delivered with that evidence that was before them. Faith is the evidence of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen. If you can fully understand it, know the exact timing, and the how, you don’t need faith or God. They took matters into their own hands and created a total mess, which still have an effect on the world today.  Ishmael was born of the flesh not of the promise when Abram was 86 years old.   Even though God said His plans to Abraham, He now let Sarah hear His promise for herself.
