"God is a Jealous God" Your sins will catch up with you.
Zephaniah's message of judgment and encouragement contains three major doctrines: 1) God is sovereign over all nations. 2) The wicked will be punished and the righteous will be vindicated on the day of judgment. 3) God blesses those who repent and trust in Him.
Zephaniah lived during one of the worst times in the history of Judah, under the evil reign of King Manasseh, which was a evil king and the grandfather of Josiah. Fortunately for Judah it would not be long before Josiah would begin his glorious reign, and it was during the revival that took place during this period that Zephaniah began to prophesy. The temple was being built and the lost scrolls of the law was found, they were read to Josiah and when Josiah hear them and believed them, he went to work for God. Josiah was quick to condemn the idolatrous worship of the Canaanite and Assyrian deities, and he predicted doom for the heathen nations that surrounded Judah: the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Ethiopians, and the Assyrians. Zephaniah also foretold of the destruction of Jerusalem, and also her glorious restoration.
