Is Northern Syria at risk?  Are the Kurds and Peshmerga at risk after they tried so hard to stabilize the NE region of Syria?  With the U.S. planning an immediate withdrawal, the places in Syria that have regained control may be destabilized.  Peshmerga means "those who face death."  They are the military foce in federal region of Iraqi Kurdistan.  Iraq is not allowed to enter Kurdistan.  They are formally under the command of Kurdistan Regional goverment under the ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.  In reality, the Pershmerga force itself is largely divided and controlled by 2 regional political parties.  the Democratic Party of Kurdistan and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

Unifying and integrating the Peshmerga has been on the public agenda since 1992 but the forces remain divided due to factionalism which has proved to be a major stumbling block. In 2003, the Kurds played a key role in the capture of Osama Bin Laden.

They have been around since the 1920s, stretching back to the Ottoman empire and the Sultans.  They were instrumental in Iran Iraq war, Iraqi Civil War of 2014-17; and recent involvement in Syrian Conflict.
