S:6 E:259 Natalie Talks Live With Writer and Photographer William Buchheit. Among other things we'll be discussing William Buchheit's first book: “The South Carolina State Hospital: Stories From Bull Street”. It tells the story of an institution founded in 1821 which eventually housed 6.600 inmates even though it’s capacity was listed as 4,823. Through the words and interviews of those who worked on the campus he tells the horror story of the horror and chaos.
William comes from a long line of News Paper journalists. For nearly two decades William has worked as a Staff Writer and Photographer for The Greer Citizen in Upstate South Carolina.
1994 graduated from the Spartanburg Day School.
1998 received a Bachelors Degree in English from Rhodes College.
After earning a Masters degree in American Literature at USC-Columbia, he began reporting for Spartanburg’s Hometown News weekly newspaper chain in 2001.
2005 received the South Carolina Medical Association’s Print Journalism Award
2011 named the Reporter of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
In recent years he has become a part-time English instructor and acclaimed wildlife photographer, whose photos of great white sharks have been published by National Geographic and the Smithsonian.
