Being a parent is not easy nor does it come with a manual. The feelings and emotions that a parent can experience can become overwhelming if not addressed appropriately.
Children are given to us as a gift from God. However being a parent never ends. Children must grow up. Parents may miss their companionship or daily contact. Different cultures have different beliefs when it comes to the process that will naturally transpire once a child becomes a young adult. This brings us to the topic: Empty Nest Syndrome. Empty Nest Syndrome is a feeling that may present as grief or loneliness that a parent may feel when their children leave home for the first time, such as to live on their own, graduating high school or college, military, or perhaps getting married.
Understanding the feelings that proceed be it anxiety or depression is often misunderstood and can affect the life of both the adult child and parent. There are steps that one can take to prepare for this prccess. If left untreated the symptoms can make one vulnerable to depression, alcoholism, identity crisis or marital conflcts. With help there are possible benefits which could consist of new opportunities to reconnect with one another, improve the quality of life ofones marriage, or perhaps rekindle interest which one previously felt that they did not have time for.
