Nelson Mandela Honored At Boys and Girls High School - Brooklyn, NY

On Saturday, December 14, 11:00 to 1:00 PM a celebration of life ceremony for the late President Nelson Mandela, took place at Boys and Girls High School, 1700 Fulton Street, in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York City. The event was hosted by Bob Meyers of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium/CBJC... After a opening drum ceremony performed by drummers including Baba Wesley Gray and Baba Shanto who performed libation...Keynote speaker Republic of South Africa Consul General, George Monyemangene addressed the audience. He was preceded by Dr. Rev Karen Daughtry, Minister Muhammad, Viola Plummer of December 12 and a host of other speakers...Immediately following the indoor celebration a motorcar procession drove thru the community after meeting at a South African community vigil at a school playground, near M.S. 113, DeKalb Avenue at Carlton, in the Fort Greene section of the borough.

The People of Brooklyn fondly remember Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The international icon of peace and justice visited the borough on June 21, 1990 (just months after his release from Robben Island) during his eight city USA tour. NYPD estimated 100,000 Brooklynites greeted the president’s motorcade as it passed thru the neighborhoods of East New York, Fort Greene; his first official stop on this tour was at Boys and Girls High School where he addressed New Yorkers.

Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, labor union SEIU, AFL/CIO Transport Workers Union Local 100, Madiba Restaurant, and Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium/CBJC are some of the organizations behind this event. City-wide elected officials, faith based, and community leaders are expected to be among the people attending.
