Susan Knox Kopta is the author of Ballasted Wings: Why That Day? When her daughter, Alexis, was a senior at Barnard College, Alexis had a mental health breakdown. Her roommates took her to the ER. Alexis self-admitted to the psych unit. She was diagnosed with bipolar. Following acute care and prior to discharge Alexis did not receive transitional care. Rather, she was discharged without bipolar support resources. A few weeks later, while on medical leave and isolated from peers and mentors, Alexis abruptly stopped her meds, fell into deep despair and threatened suicide. Her cousin took her to a county hospital. Alexis was again admitted to the psych unit.
Tonight, we talk with Susan about her efforts to help others, despite her own loss.
