Gandhi supposedly once said with terrible clarity, "I don't reject Christ. I love your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." After all the conversation we have had so far about the beauty of a God who is Three-in-One, an ever-moving, interweaving communion of love between Father, Son, and Spirit, it can be disappointing to experience life in the actual church that claims to be the God-sent message-bearers to the world. We fight, we argue, we disagree... and sometimes we even disagree on what things we have to all agree on. We can be hypocritical. We can be outright sinful. We can be so ruled by fear that we are afraid to let God move us in new directions, and we can be so afraid of seeming irrelevant that we are tempted to give up on what is essential to our faith. The Church is a messy community. And yet... it seems that part of God's genius is in loving and working through such a holy hot mess. In the fifth and final part of their conversation about the God who is Trinity, pastors Erica and Steve take a look at the people of God, the Church, in all our beauty and our ugliness, our courage and our fears, and look at what God might be up to among us, the people where God lives.
