Pastors Erica and Steve take a closer look at a scene from Luke's gospel that feels like a musical, complete with characters breaking into song.  And just like in a musical, where the motion of the plot often stops in order to go deeper into what a character is feeling or thinking at the moment, Mary's song--sometimes called "the Magnificat," is one of those moments where the story of Jesus pauses in order to say something about WHY we should be getting excited about Jesus' coming onto the scene in the first place.  And when Mary sings, interestingly enough, she doesn't just talk about the afterlife, or about Jesus being her ticket to heaven.  When you ask Mary why the birth of her son is important, she answers by saying that God's promised Savior is the one who will put things right in human relationships--lifting up the lowly, deflaiting the arrogant and proud, and restoring the hopes of a people on the margins in exile.  Now, imagine that you were Jesus, growing up with THAT kind of vision whispered in your ear--imagine THAT was how you were taught to see and think of God.  Well, no wonder Jesus grows up announcing God's blessing on the poor, and a new kind of Reign in which all are fed, the brokenhearted are bound up, and the complacent are shaken up.  Take a listen and join in the conversation, as Erica and Steve let Mary redirect our focus to hear again why Jesus' own mother thought Jesus was worth getting excited about.
