LEVITICUS 22:28 SACRIFICING THE ANIMAL AND IT’S YOUNG THE SAME DAY

28But, whether it is an ox or a sheep, you shall not kill both it and its young in one day.

QUESTION: Why does God give this particular command?

ANSWER: To discourage cruelty is one reason.  The offspring being torn from its mother or father could also represent in type Christ.  John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; Imagine the bleating of a young lamb filling the air after it is snatched from the fold and the bleating is being heard by its mother as it is led to the place of slaughter.  Christ was snatched from the fold of God’s people, beat unmercifully, forced to carry His own cross until He no longer could.  Then He was nailed to a cross and the Father heard His cry, “Eli! Eli! Lama Sabacthani” My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?”

We can read about this kind of cruelty in 2 Kings 25:7 when the King of Babylon killed King Zedekiah’s sons in his presence and them gouged out his eyes.  Zedekiah was the last king of Judah.
